About

Fantail House is located on the Catlins Coast in Pounawea, New Zealand. Stepping out of the deck are magnificent views of the forest and estuary located just across the street. Next door you will find to the local playground and tennis court.

The house includes a modern kitchen, two lounges, two showers, one toilet, 3 bedrooms and 6 beds. Additional features include, 9 kayaks, board games and two TVs with a DVD player.

To keep busy the town has several easy walking paths which back track through native forests. Why not jump in a kayak and explore the estuary. Pounawea is a place to explore and relax in privacy. Its not busy but has lots of surprising things to do.

During busy times (summer and school holidays), check in is at 5pm and check out is 11am. In the quiet season you will usually be able to arrive early and leave late.

Kayaking

Step right off the doorstep and enjoy a relaxing kayak in the estuary outside the house or along the beautiful Catlins River. We have a range of kayaks including adult and kids for your use.

Fishing

The Catlins offers remote rainforest and rolling hills, ideal for anglers seeking solitude and stunning scenery, with rivers and streams holding a good level of brown trout.

Walking & Biking

Get amongst nature and explore with scenic walks including: Tunnel Hill, The Wisp Loop Track, Jack’s Blowhole, Nugget Point and much more.

Cathedral Caves

Located in the cliffs at the northern end of pristine Waipati Beach, the Cathedral Caves are a highlight for visitors to the Catlins.

Wildlife

The Catlins is populated with numerous Coastal and marine wildlife species as well as a variety of birds and native bush.

Waterfalls

The Catlins is blessed with some spectacular waterfalls with Purakaunui Falls being the most famous, followed by the McLean and Matai Falls.

Eating & Drinking

Fantail House is self-catering. Bring your own food, and cook meals using the facilities provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need. Owaka is just 4.5km away and has a supermarket plus several cafes and restaurants to choose from.
